BYU and San Diego State to Represent MWC in NCAA Softball Tournament

MWC sends multiple teams to postseason for fifth time in history of league.

May 11, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU and San Diego State will represent the Mountain West Conference in the 2008 NCAA Softball Championship. The Aztecs earned the automatic bid to the championship after winning the MWC regular-season crown with a 15-5 league record, while the Cougars received an at-large bid after posting a 42-18 overall record.

The Division I championship consists of 64 teams. Four teams will participate at each of 16 regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. Sixteen teams were seeded and placed at one of the regional sites.

The Aztecs (43-15) will participate in the Fresno Regional at Fresno, Calif. SDSU will face California (40-24) in the opening-day game on Friday, May 16. The Aztecs defeated California 7-0 earlier this season. In other first-day action, No. 16 seed Fresno State (51-11) will host Sacramento State (32-19).

The Cougars will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Chapel Hill Regional, and will begin with competition from host North Carolina (50-10) on Thursday, May 15. The other opening-day game will feature No. 15 seed Georgia (43-22) vs. Campbell (41-23).

BYU will be making its fourth consecutive appearance and fifth overall in the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars hold a 4-8 all-time record in the championship. San Diego State will compete in its fourth NCAA Tournament and holds a 6-6 all-time record.

Team pairings were determined by geographical proximity, with the exception that teams from the same conference were not paired during regional competition, when possible.

The regional winners will advance to the super regional competition for a best-of-three series May 23-24 at eight campus sites.

The remaining eight teams will advance to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team, double elimination tournament. The championship final will be a best-of-three-series. The WCWS will be conducted May 29 - June 1 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
