MWC NOTES
San Diego State Wins Fourth Title
San Diego State won its last six conference games to win its fourth MWC regular-season title with a 15-5 record. BYU finished in second place with a 14-6 league record, followed by Utah with an even 10-10 mark.
BYU and San Diego State to Represent MWC in NCAA Tournament
The Aztecs (43-15) will participate in the Fresno Regional at Fresno, Calif. SDSU will face California (40-24) in the opening-day game on Friday, May 16. The Aztecs defeated California 7-0 earlier this season. The Cougars will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Chapel Hill Regional, and will begin with competition from host North Carolina (50-10) on Thursday, May 15. BYU will be making its fourth consecutive appearance and fifth overall in the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars hold a 4-8 all-time record in the championship. San Diego State will compete in its fourth NCAA Tournament and holds a 6-6 all-time record.
In The Rankings
San Diego State continues to be ranked in the USA Today/NFCA poll at No. 21 and in the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball poll at No. 19 this week. BYU is also receiving votes in both polls.
BYU
The Cougars will make their fourth straight NCAA appearance when they travel to the Chapel Hill region...Post season play begins on Thursday at 3:30 when BYU will face host school, North Carolina...BYU finished the regular season 42-18, marking the program's fourth 40-win season...Five BYU players were named All-MWC.
Colorado State
Colorado State finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 29-22, securing their sixth consecutive season with at least 25 wins and sixth consecutive season in which the team finished .500 or better...Senior Lauren Cusick added to her single-season and career home run totals with two more home runs over the weekend...She finished the 2008 season with 20 home runs, shattering the previous record of 14 set last season by then-freshman Ashley Munoz...Additionally, Cusick improved her career home run total to 38, surpassing the old mark of 33 (Brittany Huerta, 2004-07).
New Mexico
The Lobos continued to improved under head coach Ty Singleton this season and recorded their most wins since 2004...UNM was one win shy of having its first winning season since 2001 and only had three seniors on the roster...Sophomore Katie Gilmore was named All-MWC by the league's coaches...Gilmore is the only UNM player on the 20-member softball all-conference team after leading the league in hitting during conference play.
San Diego State
With a 9-0 win against UNLV on Friday, SDSU set a school record with its 42nd victory of the season...The Aztecs added another win with a 6-0 shutout over the Rebels on Saturday...Christina Ross has tossed three consecutive shutouts and has gone 22 2/3 innings without allowing a run...SDSU is 20-4 on single game days this season (23-11 on multi-game days).
UNLV
UNLV closed out 2008 with a 25-40-1 record and 5-15 in MWC play...UNLV was led offensively by All-MWC performer Jaci Hull in nearly all offensive categories: average (.337), runs (47), doubles (11), home runs (13), RBI (42), total bases (110), slugging (.663), walks (43) and on-base (.491).
Utah
With a 10-10 record, Utah finished third in the conference after being selected to finish sixth at the start of the season...Diana Phillips closes out her career ranked in the top-five at Utah in batting average (.360), hits (245), runs (131) and triples (14)...She is one of two players selected to the 2008 all-conference team who has earned four such honors.
